For hundreds of years till today, ramie people use this simple tool to peel the outside vegitable gum layers off from the skins torn off from ramie stems.

In Dazhu village, most households still own such a toy. When the fresh and wet skin is taken off from the stem, the ramie peeling tool is then used to peel off the vegetable part before drying them in the wind. In very early times, people put the whole skins in ponds for weeks till the vegetable part got rotten. Then wash away the rotten part with clean water and the fibers would stay for next process.

Since ramie grows everywhere, anyone can cut some ramie plants, take off the leafs and start to peel the skin. Students, pregnant women and stay home grandmas…they will dry the fibers in the yards. Some people will come to collect them and pay them pocket money. Or they can take the dried fibers and go to the local fiber collection center.

The most challenging of of bast fiber making is degumming. During this process, peeled fibers get deeper cleaning off their bones and combined strips. When the collection center collects the naturally dried ramie, they will sell to degumming factories. Usually the dry ramie fibers will directly put into cooking shelves

Anthyia premium ramie: In order to get better fiber, we cut off rough part before degumming.

After the raw ramie fiber is placed in a huge hanging basket, then this huge basket will be Hanging into the big pot. For many years, the fibers will be cooked in high temperature with alkali solution. Strong alkali could destroy the fiber´s flexibility. Then the cooked fibers will be washed before drying. Many ramie fibers and fabrics you find in the market were made purely this way.

Our premium fiber will be socked for hours in a biological enzymes solution where bacterias will digest most of the bonny parts of the raw fibers. This is called biologic degumming. This ecologica degumming method currently is only less than 90 percent effective. Then there is a very quick dip in cooking process to finish the dydumming.
